What Does Testosterone Do In Your Body?

The Functioning Of Testosterone

We have all heard about the effects that Testosterone has on our bodies. How it controls our most male characteristics, sex drive, muscle growth, body hair and even our moods.

The actual way in that it interacts within the body is however, rather complicated. But taking a little time to try and understand just what it does and how it does it should make it easier for you to benefit from the power that increased levels of this hormone can do for you.

What Is Testosterone

Testosterone (T) is a natural anabolic steroid, it is the key male sex hormone and is what effectively makes you a man.

T is responsible for the growth and maintenance of your reproductive system. From puberty onwards it enables the growth of the sex organs, manages your sexual responses and even fertility.

It dictates and controls body hair growth, your deeper male voice, muscle growth and strength, levels of body fat and moods/personality.

Production And Release Of Testosterone Into Your Body

Testosterone is release into the body in what is quite a complex process. These are regulated by the hypothalamic Pituitary gonadal (HPG) Axis.

When the brain calls for more testosterone, a gland in your brain called the hypothalamus releases a hormone called gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH).

GnRH then acts upon another gland called the pituitary gland which is just under the hypothlamalus. The pituitary gland then releases 2 separate hormones – LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone).

LH travels down to the Leidig cells in the testes, and triggers the response to produce T.

This process is compared to a complex relay race, with each stage not being able to function without the previous one.

Testosterone Is A Natural Steroid Hormone

All hormones can be classed or grouped together by their chemical makeup.

As an example, both Insulin and Growth hormone are made up of amino acid chains.

Steroid type hormones such as Testosterone are not made with proteins. Instead they are made using lipids – AKA Cholesterol. Cholesterol in your body is converted into T by a complex process carried out in the testes.

First it is converted into Pregnenolone by an enzyme called cytochrome P450. Following on from that stage, it is then converted into other hormones including androstenedione, before ultimately becoming testosterone.

Other steroid hormones include Estrogen, progestins and glucocorticoids.

The Effects Of Testosterone on Cell Function

Testosterone is the main male hormone, and as such has a direct effect on what happens in the body at cellular level. It can reach all cells in the body, but only has any effect on those which have Androgen Receptors. These work by catching the hormone in the bloodstream and passing it into the cell.  This is a process called Steroid Hormone Activated Transcription Factor.

Androgen receptors are found throughout many parts of the body, these include. –

  • The Prostate
  • Liver
  • Skeletal Muscle
  • Central Nervous System

Once grabbed by the androgen receptor, testosterone changes its structure by a process known as hormone response element. It then enters the cells and start to activate and regulate changes in certain genes.

Depending on the age of the male in question, this effect can take the form of increased muscle mass, development of the sexual organs, deepening the voice, and encourage the growth of body hair. In older adult males, it will also help by boosting strength, sex drive and helping to regulate body fat (particularly around the belly area).

Summary

Testosterone is the key hormone responsible for everything that is manly. It helps boost and retain strength, energy, and sexual responses.

But it cannot perform its magic without androgen receptors that allow it into the cells. Here it can have dramatic effects on both your genes and DNA.

Throughout puberty and into our twenties, perhaps our early thirties, our Testosterone production is at its peak. As we go through our thirties and into our forties and beyond our natural T levels start to naturally reduce.  This is usually at the rate of about 1-2% per year.

At first the reduction is unnoticeable, but by the time we reach our mid 40’s and beyond, our Testosterone production can be up to 40% lower than it was in our prime, and it can only get worse.

This Is Where A Good Natural Testosterone Booster Can Help

Unlike synthetic drug based testosterone therapies that can be fraught with risks and side effects, natural T boosters work in our body at hormonal and cellular level to directly trigger the body into making more of its natural hormone.

With more of our natural, genetic testosterone flowing through our body, we can usually expect to see drastic improvements in our muscle tone, energy, sex drive and moods. There can also be a reduction in belly fat.

To truly harness the power of testosterone, you need to take a good quality, well formulated testosterone booster. With so many products available its difficult to really know which ones work and those that do not.
